In order to combat cybercrime and raise awareness of online activity, Pakistan has decided to register websites, web channels, and YouTube channels.

According to reports, the government is considering setting up a separate regulatory body to keep an eye on the nation’s internet activity and cybercrime.

The authority, which will be created under the Ministry of Information Technology, would receive the authority currently held by PTA and the FIA cybercrime cell.

A bill to create the “E-Safety Authority” has been sent by the ministry to the federal cabinet. The authority will keep an eye on all websites.

Additionally, it will have the power to grant licenses, levy penalties for legal transgressions, and keep an eye on newspaper and TV channel websites.

As Pakistan decides to register websites, reports further state that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will lose its authority to control websites.

The bill also claims that the FIA, which was tasked with blocking social media content, was overworked and that the PTA did not have access to do so under the PICA Act.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is the telecommunication regulator of Pakistan, responsible for the establishment, operation, and maintenance of telecommunication systems and the provision of telecommunication services in Pakistan. Headquartered in Islamabad, PTA also has regional offices located in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Muzaffarabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Gilgit.
