PM suspends fixed sales tax collection through electricity bills. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif banned fixed sales tax collection through energy bills on Saturday and authorized the development of a new method in this regard.
The prime minister also ordered an investigation into the imposition of an enhanced sales tax ratio on shopkeepers/retailers in electricity bills other than the agreed-upon one.
As PM suspends fixed sales tax collection through electricity bills, these directions were issued by the prime minister while he was chairing a meeting to evaluate electricity pricing and fixed sales tax collection through electricity bills.
Engineer Khurram Dastagir, Minister of Energy, Miftah Ismail, Minister of State for Petroleum Dr. Musadik Malik, Chairman Federal Bureau of Revenue, relevant federal secretaries, and other key officials attended the meeting.
During the discussion, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif specifically requested that representatives of traders be included in the dialogue process before making any decisions regarding the collection of taxes from shops via electricity bills.
While resolving that the government would take all necessary actions to protect the impoverished parts of society’s economy, the prime minister also urged the relevant authorities and ministries to establish an effective method for lowering power rates for the poor as soon as possible.
Shehbaz Sharif is a Pakistani politician and businessman who served as the 23rd prime minister of Pakistan, in office from April 2022 to August 2023. He is the current president of the Pakistan Muslim League.
