Coke Studio song ‘Pasoori’ finds new home in Africa

Ali Sethi wows crowd on Coachella's second weekend

The popularity gained by ‘Pasoori’ in the past year is unparalleled. Ali Sethi and Shae Gill’s hit song from the fourteenth season of Coke Studio has transcended borders and is making waves around the world. Upon its release, the song gained immense popularity not only in Pakistan but also in India and other countries. The hit song has now established itself in the regions of Africa.

Thursday saw the release of a remixed version of the viral song for Coke Studio Africa. Artists Marwan Moussa and Reekado Banks, who collaborated with Sethi on his song, infused Nigerian Afrobeats into the already hypnotic beat of the song in the revised version of the song. The new remix has revitalized the song and infused it with an African flavor, fusing the genres and cultures of two distinctly different regions.

The song begins with Sethi’s soulful vocals and the song’s original lyrics. Later on, rapper Moussa and singer Banks hop on the track, introducing African elements with Egyptian and trap beats to create a very distinct version of the original. Whether or not one can relate to or fully comprehend the lyrics is irrelevant; the real magic lies in the vibe of the tune and beat.

In honor of the remix, Sethi uploaded the newly-released version of the song to Instagram, along with a caption expressing his delight at its release. He was overjoyed to see his “little tune” transform into a “whole new song.”

The Coke Studio single was released in February and has maintained its position at the top of the charts ever since. It is safe to say that the song is a feat in its own right, as the single broke numerous records around the world. Ms. Marvel also featured “Pasoori,” a song celebrating Pakistani culture in general.

‘Pasoori’ was the sixth song released in Coke Studio’s fourteenth season. Sethi and Fazal Abbas collaborated on the lyrics, while Sethi and Zulfiqar J Khan, better known as Xulfi, contributed to the composition. Xulfi and Abdullah Siddiqui were also responsible for producing the song’s music.
