Rs4.69 increase in electricity tariff on the cards

The CPPA has filed a plea at Nepra demanding an increase in the power pricing of Rs4.69/unit on Sunday.

According to sources, the electricity rate is likely to rise by Rs4.69/unit after the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) submitted its request to the National Electricity and Power Regulatory Authority.

The increase has been requested in the July monthly fuel adjustment.

If the increase is approved by the Nepra, power users will face an additional burden of Rs65 billion.

The CPPA petition will be heard by the Nepra on August 31.

In July, the CPPA reported that 35.17% of electricity was generated from hydro sources, 12.74% from coal, 1.46% from diesel, 10.36% from local gas, and 14.98% from imported LNG, 14.20% from atomic energy, and 6.42% from furnace oil.

It went on to say that the cost of electricity produced by diesel remained Rs27.88/unit, that of furnace oil was Rs35.69/unit, that of LNG was Rs28.28/unit, and that of atomic energy was Re1/unit.

The CPPA also maintained in their petition that the reference cost for the month of July was determined at Rs6.28/unit. However, the cost of producing power remained at Rs10.98/unit.

It stated that 18.76 billion units of power were produced last month.
