Former run-off president Rajapaksa returns to Sri Lanka
An airport official reported that former president of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa arrived back in the country on Friday. He further added, “he returned seven weeks after fleeing the country amid the island’s worst-ever economic crisis.”
The official claimed that Rajapaksa was showered with flowers by a receiving party of ministers and MPs as he stepped off the plane at the main international airport. The opponents claim that he was trying to demonstrate his continued power in the Indian Ocean country which he brought to ruin.

“There was a rush of government politicians to garland him as he came out of the aircraft,” the official told.
After months of outraged protests accusing him of being responsible for the country’s unparalleled economic catastrophe, unarmed crowds stormed Rajapaksa’s official residence in the middle of July, forcing him to flee under military protection.
From Singapore, he submitted his letter of resignation before taking off for Thailand, where he pleaded with his successor Ranil Wickremesinghe to make his return easier.
