Fact Check: Is Junaid Safdar arrested in London?
Several users on Twitter shared a video on the platform referring to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s grandson, Muhammad Junaid Safdar’s arrest. He has unabashedly denied any such occurrence and brushed off any claims regarding his arrest in London by Scotland Yard.
As usual, Twiterratis were quick to link the apparent arrest with some accusation. Some pointed out that Mr. Safdar could be arrested for the stolen Bentley which was later found in Karachi, while others accused him of obtaining a fake degree.
Muhammad Junaid Safdar, however, soon released a statement that all news circulation on social media is completely fake & baseless.
“The video being shared is completely fake. For those who have a short memory, this video is from 2018 when I was arrested for responding in self-defense to some PTI goons who took no time in turning tail” added Mr. Safdar.
He also referred to Scotland Yard police for carrying out a criminal investigation but no further action was taken.
“I am told that a journalist who propagated this fake news has deleted this tweet. It seems like it has been done less out of more consideration but more out of embarrassment. The man did not issue any clarification or apology. Sounds like a man of grace & integrity. I have nothing more to say on this conduct”, said in the statement released by Mr. Safdar.
The former prime minister’s grandson also showed great despise over the wrong usage of social media. He said that in today’s day and age, it is unfortunate that social media is used as a vehicle to run fake campaigns and attack opponents. Also, whoever is interested in my degree & wants to know its legitimacy should contact the institution where I graduated from.
Mr. Safdar graduated from the University of Cambridge back in BA in Law back in January 2022. The video is widely shared is from July 18, 2018, when Nawaz Sharif & Maryam Nawaz had just left for London. A tussle began between Mr. Safdar, his two cousins & some protestors outside Avenfield Flats.
While this news was still circulating, it is also pertinent to mention that Maryam Nawaz’s secretary brushed off the news and even said that those who re-sharing this fake news should die of shame.
