During their meeting yesterday on the margins of a regional summit in Uzbekistan, Russian President Vladimir Putin laughed awkwardly at Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s unsuccessful attempt to put on his headphones.

During their discussions in Samarkand, where the 22nd summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is taking place, the device came off Mr. Sharif’s ears. Putin eventually laughed, and it was audible.

While Putin waited for the conversation to start, the Pakistani prime leader initially took some time to fix his headphones and requested assistance. But as their meeting was ready to start, it came out of his ears, and the Russian president couldn’t hold back an audible but muffled chuckle.

The supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, criticized Mr. Sharif on social media, calling the episode an “embarrassment” for the nation.

Another image from the event was provided by a regional chief of the opposition party, who described the delegation headed by Mr. Sharif as “sitting lazily like a beggar.”

Former Deputy Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly Qasim Khan Suri responded to Mr. Sharif’s tweet claiming that he had a productive day in Samarkand by saying, “But in the image, one party is writing a note and the other is sitting lazily like a beggar.”

Along with Mr. Sharif, the Pakistani group included the Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail, and Defense Minister Khawaja Asif.

The SCO is holding its first in-person meeting in two years, dispelling Covid’s concerns. Eight of the member countries leaders are present, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Samarkand last night.

Putin informed Mr. Sharif that Russia can provide gas to Pakistan because the essential infrastructures are already in place during their meeting. According to Putin, Pakistan and Russia are working together on other exciting and ambitious initiatives, particularly in the field of energy.
