Mexico’s Pacific coast rocked by earthquake
An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale rocked Mexico’s central Pacific coast on Monday, killing at least one person and triggering a seismic warning in the troubled capital on the anniversary of two previous devastating earthquakes. Exactly 37 years a day since the deadliest earthquake in Mexico
The Mexican National Seismological Service initially claimed that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8, with its epicentre several hundred miles west of Mexico City, near the border of the states of Colima and Michoacan. Mexican seismologists corrected the quake’s magnitude to 7.4, while the United States Geological Survey put the figure at 7.6 and said a tsunami was possible. The quake comes on the anniversary of Mexico’s deadliest quake, when more than 5,000 people were reported dead after an 8.1 magnitude quake hit the capital on September 19, 1985.

Another earthquake on the same day in 2017, with its epicentre inland and much closer to Mexico City than Monday’s quake, killed more than 200 people and injured around 1,300. Authorities had triggered the earthquake alerts in remembrance of those past events about an hour earlier on Monday, before having to use them around 1 p.m. local hour. Mexico is located on what is known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most active area of volcanic and tectonic activity on the planet. It spans several continents and includes most of the western coast of the Americas and most of the eastern tip of Asia, as well as some islands in the Pacific.
