PM Modi to attend state funeral of former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe

On September 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Japan to attend the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was shot dead in July.

Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, was shot dead on July 8 while giving an election speech in western Japan ahead of the July 10 House of Council elections. Modi will visit Japan on September 27 to attend the state funeral, the foreign ministry said.

During the visit, he will also meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida separately. Modi had a close relationship with Abe. He offered his condolences on the passing of his “dear friend” Abe and said the former Japanese prime minister had dedicated his life to making the world a better place.

A few months ago, during a speech in Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi recalled the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his trip to Gujarat, saying that the people of Gujarat fondly remember Abe’s visit to the state. Abe’s efforts to bring Japan and India closer are now being continued by incumbent Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
