China’s ambassador to the United States thanked Elon Musk for proposing a special administrative region for Taiwan, while Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to Washington chided the billionaire, saying “his freedom and democracy are not s ‘don’t buy’.

“Taiwan sells many products, but our freedom and democracy are not for sale,” Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to Washington, tweeted on Saturday. “Any lasting proposal for our future must be decided peacefully, without coercion and with respect for the democratic aspirations of the people of Taiwan.”

China’s Ambassador to the United States, Qin Gang, tweeted on Saturday, stressing Beijing’s call for “peaceful reunification and ‘one country, two systems'” for the island while thanking Musk.

Days after a possible agreement to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been condemned in Ukraine, was unveiled, Musk suggested that tensions between China and Taiwan could be resolved by ceding a part of Taiwan’s control in Beijing.

Musk was answering a question about China, where his electric car company Tesla has a large factory.

Beijing, which claims Taiwan as one of its provinces, has long pledged to bring Taiwan under its control and has not ruled out the use of force to that end. Taiwan’s democratic government strongly rejects China’s sovereignty claims, saying only the island’s 23 million people can decide their future.
