Joe Biden, Rishi Sunak to team up to help Ukraine
Joe Biden, the US president, and Rishi Sunak, the next prime minister of Britain, decided to team up to help Ukraine and confront China during meetings on Tuesday, according to the White House.
They first chatted a few hours after Sunak became Britain’s third prime minister this year and took office amid an economic crisis following Liz Truss’s resignation after 49 days in office.
In a rare US presidential involvement, Biden only recently appeared to publicly criticize Truss’s failed economic strategy. In light of ongoing difficulties about Northern Ireland’s post-Brexit arrangements, relations between the two nations have also become relatively tense in recent years. The White House is worried about how it would affect regional peace.
According to a summary of their conversation released by the White House, Biden and Sunak reiterated the “special connection” between the US and Britain and pledged to collaborate to enhance world security and prosperity.
According to a Downing Street spokesperson, Sunak has assured Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, that Britain will continue to assist Ukraine with steadfastness and “as strong as ever under his prime.” The Prime Minister stated President Zelenskiy could rely on his administration to maintain its support. Both leaders concurred that Putin’s brutal administration must continue to be under pressure through ongoing economic sanctions.
Zelenskiy asserted that he thought “British leadership in preserving democracy and freedom” would continue to grow. In an evening video address, he stated, “Ukraine and Britain have just reached new heights in ties, but yet, we still have the potential to enhance our collaboration.” He also claimed that he had invited Sunak to come to Ukraine.
As Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak team up to help Ukraine, they also agreed, according to the White House, to “face the challenges posed by China,” which Washington has classified as its top geopolitical and economic foe globally. Prior to the conversation, Downing Street had issued a readout of the meeting in which it discussed attempts to “fight China’s negative influence”.
According to the statement, President Biden congratulated the prime minister on his appointment and expressed enthusiasm for their forthcoming tight collaboration. The prime minister concurred with the president’s assessment of the relationship’s immense strength, saying that the UK continues to be America’s closest ally.
