Speaking Truth to Oppressed

Instagram’s suspension resulted in a sharp decline in followers

Users are being locked out of Instagram as a result of an outage that began on Monday morning, and many are being told that their accounts will be suspended on October 31, 2022. The majority of reports of the problem come from iPhone users, with some claiming that their app recently crashed and became unusable prior to an update earlier this morning.

On Twitter, the website acknowledged the problem and said, “We’re aware that some of you are having trouble accessing your Instagram account. We regret the inconvenience as we look into it.”

We’ve been able to access some previously “suspended” accounts as of 11:55 AM ET, and reports collected by DownDetector appear to be decreasing.

The suspensions also resulted in a sharp decline in follower numbers, which helped us put the number of users that are having problems in perspective. Verge’s Instagram account lost 10,000 followers today, as observed by Tristan Cooper, our social media manager, but now its follower count is beginning to rebound.

Around 10:15 AM ET, a quick glance at Cristiano Ronaldo’s Instagram account revealed that, compared to the 493 million followers it had the day before, it appeared to have lost 3 million followers. Instagram’s main account had also lost over a million followers.
