Flashbacks of ’92 for Pakistan before T20WC final
Prior to Sunday’s Twenty20 championship game, Pakistan soaked up anecdotes from the historic 1992 Cricket World Cup final victory over England. According to team coach Matthew Hayden, Pakistan hopes to one day share their own triumphant stories.
In that 50-over competition at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Imran Khan’s team defeated England by 22 runs to win the World Cup trophy and make history for Pakistan cricket.
Ramiz Raja, the head of the Pakistan cricket board, spoke to Babar Azam’s team on Friday morning, according to Hayden. Raja opened the batting for Pakistan and took the decisive catch to secure victory in the 1992 final.
Former Australia opener Hayden told reporters at the MCG that the player was “reliving some of those stories around the ’92 World Cup.”
“And I believe that’s fantastic because it’s the reason you play the game”, Hayden added.
“These youngsters’ careers will end in a flash, and they will remember this tournament fondly.”
“And they’ll share these tales around campfires in their communities and at press conferences like this one, making it an important chapter in Pakistan cricket history, much like the 1992 campaign was.”
After humiliating India by 10 wickets in Thursday’s semifinal at Adelaide Oval, England, which won the most recent 50-over World Cup in 2019 on home soil, is considered a clear favourite to win on Sunday.
The English, particularly their captain Jos Buttler and Alex Hales, who chased down 169 for victory in an unbroken partnership to humiliate India’s bowlers, were viewed by Hayden as being a good match for Pakistan’s attack.

I believe all of the bases are covered,” Hayden further added. “I believe that the setups on both sides are actually pretty equal.” Just “even-stevens” will do. I always believed that England would pose a serious danger at the beginning of this tournament. And now we are about to enter the final.
