UN condemns Iran’s execution of protester

UN experts expressed concern about artists in the country facing death sentence charges and denounced the execution on Thursday of a 23-year-old Iranian protester who was found guilty after widespread demonstrations.

The young Iranian was hanged on Thursday morning after being found guilty of “waging war against God” by the Tehran Islamic Revolution Court.

According to the experts, 12 people have already received death sentences after being accused of “waging war against God” and “corruption on earth,” according to government officials.

“Executions following unfair trials constitute an arbitrary deprivation of life,” they said, urging Iran to establish a moratorium on executions to abolish the death penalty.

They pointed out that, according to international law, the death sentence could only be applied in circumstances where the offence involved an intended killing and all necessary precautions were put in place to ensure a fair trial.

“We fear for the life of Iranian artists who have been indicted on charges carrying the death penalty,” the experts said.

They specifically referred to rapper Saman Yasin, who had apparently been condemned to death after being convicted by the Tehran Islamic Revolution Court on Oct. 29 of “waging war against God.”
