Who is Julian Assange and why is he wanted in the US?

The case of Julian Assange has drawn the most attention to the United States in terms of free expression and the press.

Earlier, a UK judge issued a formal order extraditing Wikileaks founder Julian Assange to the US to face charges relating to the publication of secret material pertaining to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Julian Assange founded Wikileaks, a website notorious for publishing hundreds of confidential documents and exposing numerous scandals and secrets.

Wikileaks published classified Democratic Party emails during the 2016 presidential campaign, indicating that the party’s national committee favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the primaries.

In November 2010, while Assange was in the United Kingdom, Sweden acquired an international arrest warrant for him based on allegations of sexual misconduct.

Who is he and what does he do?

Julian Assange is the founder of WikiLeaks, a website known for publishing hundreds of sensitive papers and revealing various scandals and secrets. WikiLeaks is a “multinational media organization and affiliated library,” according to the organization’s official website.

Julian, the organization’s publisher, launched it in 2006. WikiLeaks “specializes in analyzing and publishing enormous datasets of censored or otherwise restricted official materials concerning war, spying, and corruption.”

Why is Julian Assange wanted in the US?

Assange is wanted in the United States for an alleged conspiracy to divulge national defense secrets after Wikileaks revealed hundreds of thousands of classified documents related to the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts.

Following the revelation of thousands of private documents and diplomatic cables by Wikileaks in 2010, he was charged with 18 criminal offenses in the United States.

If proven guilty, Assange could face up to 175 years in prison.

He has always claimed that he is completely innocent of any wrongdoing.

The release of sensitive information, according to Assange’s legal team, revealed US misconduct and was in the public interest.
