Quaid-i-Azam University closed after armed clash between students groups

Quaid-i-Azam University expels 79 students

The Quaid-i-Azam University, one of the top universities in South Asia, has been closed following new clashes between administration, students, and law enforcement.

Several students were seriously injured during the clashes. According to the university administration, the injured students are in stable condition. Clips circulating on the internet show a swarm of armed students chasing each other.

 

The varsity Registrar issued a notification about the clashes which cited “In the backdrop of precarious law and order situation, amid violent clashes between students group, Quaid-i-Azam University is closed till further orders.”

It further directed all hostel residents to vacate the premises at the earliest.

 

 

Reports in local media suggest that large contingents of law enforcement personnel including paramilitary troops rushed to varsity to control the situation.

Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad founded as the University of Islamabad, is a ranked 1 public research university in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Founded in 1967, it was initially dedicated to the study of postgraduate education but expanded and established as Qaid e Azam university in 1973 to an interdisciplinary university offering undergraduate and postgraduate education.

The university has, as of 2015, growing into the largest varsity in Islamabad with a total enrollment exceeding 13,000 students. The university is on a 1700 acre (or 6.9 km2) campus on the foothills of the Margalla.
