Maryam Nawaz, the chief organizer of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), has demanded Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandial’s resignation in the aftermath of the Punjab polls verdict.
Maryam Sharif, the daughter of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, claimed that abuse of power has led to a rebellion in the Supreme Court.
“CJP Umar Ata Bandiyal has committed flagrant violations of law & constitution to favor IK/PTI,” she tweeted.
”This blatant abuse of authority has led to an unprecedented revolt-like situation in the SC of Pakistan,” she added.
On April 4, the Supreme Court overturned the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) order delaying elections in Punjab, ordering polls on May 14.
The ECP’s order was declared unconstitutional by a three-member special bench led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and comprised of Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Ijazul Ahsan.
The court ordered the federal government to release Rs21 billion to the Election Commission by April 10 and directed the electoral watchdog to file a report with the court before the deadline.
Umar Ata Bandial is a Pakistani jurist who currently serves as the 28th Chief Justice of Pakistan. His appointment as the new Chief Justice was approved by President Arif Alvi on 13 January 2022, after which he assumed his office on 2 February 2022.
