Uber to shut down services in Pakistan's five cities

Uber has decided to shut down services in Pakistan’s five cities.

Uber Technologies Inc will shut down its ride-sharing app in five cities in Pakistan, including Karachi and Islamabad, the company said on Tuesday in a bid to reduce market overlap between the U.S. company and its Careem unit in the Middle East.

Uber will shut down services in Pakistan’s five cities including Multan, Faisalabad, and Peshawar, but the Uber app will remain active in Lahore, where the company plans to launch new products.

He said drivers and motorcyclists in the five cities can switch to the Careem app, the Dubai-based company that bought it for $ 3.1 billion in 2019 to dominate ride-hailing markets in the Middle East and Pakistan.

The move comes as the South Asian country faces an economic collapse exacerbated by devastating floods this summer, causing more than 1,700 casualties and an estimated $ 30 billion in damage.

Uber said in a statement that it would prioritize minimizing the impact on employees, drivers, motorcyclists, and partners using the Uber app during this change in those cities.
