As Hamas fires 5,000 rockets from Gaza, here are the top 10 points on current situation:
- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that his country is at war, and that Hamas will pay a heavy price. “We are at war, Israeli citizens. This isn’t an operation or an escalation; it’s war. And we will triumph. In a video message, he added, “Hamas will pay an unprecedented price.”
- On this festive holiday morning, almost 5,000 missiles pierced the sky towards Israel, while deafening sirens blared around the country. The country’s defence forces also claimed that Hamas militants, whom they consider terrorists, infiltrated their ranks. According to Israeli media, paragliders were utilised in the attack, and automobiles passing by were fired at.
- Yoav Gallant, Israel’s Defence Minister, said Hamas made a “grave mistake” in waging a war against Israel. “Hamas made a grave error this morning by declaring war on the State of Israel.” “IDF (Israeli army) troops are fighting the enemy in every location,” Gallant said in a statement.
- “The Israel Defence Forces declare a state of war readiness.” The Israeli military previously stated that “there has been widespread rocket fire into Israeli territory from Gaza, and terrorists have infiltrated Israeli territory through various entry points,” and vowed to defend the country.
- The Hamas military wing hailed the start of “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” and claimed to have fired over 5,000 missiles in the “first strike of 20 minutes.” “We have decided, with the help of God, to put an end to all of this, so that the enemy understands that the time of recklessness without accountability is over,” Hamas militant chief Mohamed Deif said in a pre-recorded address.
- Sirens are wailing in the holy city of Jerusalem and throughout Israel, as many sites of impact have been detected in the country’s southern and centre regions. The administration has ordered residents to remain near shelters and those near the Gaza Strip to remain at home.
- According to emergency services, an elderly Israeli woman was killed “due to a direct hit” in the rocket attacks, while 15 others were injured.
- Online, disturbing images of people fleeing their homes in Gazan border areas have appeared. Hundreds of men and women were observed bringing blankets and food goods away from the Israeli border.
- Since Hamas gained authority in Gaza in 2007, Israel and Palestinian militants have fought three conflicts. The latest incident came after Israel blocked its gates to Gazan labourers. So far this year, 247 Palestinians, 32 Israelis, and two foreigners have been killed in the violence. There are both fighters and civilians among them.
- The violence occurred a day after Hamas stated that “people had to draw a line to end the occupation” and that Israel continues to perpetrate crimes across Palestinian territory, particularly at the holy site of Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.
