Why has China banned iPhone for government officials?
For more than a decade, China has sought to reduce its reliance on foreign technologies. In 2020, its leaders proposed a “dual circulation” growth model in order to reduce reliance on foreign markets and technology.
China’s latest restrictions are similar to those imposed in the United States on Chinese smartphone maker Huawei Technologies and the short video platform TikTok. China is one of Apple’s most important markets, accounting for nearly one-fifth of its revenue.
As Sino-US tensions rise, the ban may cause concern among foreign companies operating in China. Washington collaborates with allies to prevent China from gaining access to critical equipment required to keep its chip industry competitive, while Beijing restricts shipments from prominent US firms.

According to US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, US companies have complained to her that China has become “uninvestable,” citing fines, raids, and other actions that have made doing business in the world’s second-largest economy risky.
It is unclear how the ban will be enforced or what the penalties will be for officials who break it. However, it demonstrates China’s growing willingness to limit the use of foreign technologies.
